Our Association is a mutual aid fraternity with the purpose of preserving and promoting traditional Bamboo Forest Temple Praying Mantis Kungfu.
Our leaders and members are prominent business men, citizens, and martial artists just like you.
Members of our Association do not practice martial art for self-aggrandizement, tournaments or competitions. Our Art is not a sport. Our training is aimed toward developing supportive skills and habits which can be used in daily life. Our practice is of an inner nature and therefore we don't boast or commercialize ourselves or our martial art.
Anecdote: In the late 1950's and early 60's, Lam Sang's mantid's were well known in NYC. They all wore jackets with the mantis emblem and when occasion required they enforced the law. One such occasion some sailors on shore had come to Chinatown in search of fun and pleasure and on a main street accosted a Chinese girl. Perhaps they didn't mean any serious harm but were obviously harassing the maiden. To the sailors dismay, Lam Sang's mantids who patrolled that section of Chinatown happened upon the scene and quickly rendered the aggressive sailors harmless, leaving them disabled on the sidewalk. The maiden escaped without giving thanks to her benefactors and the Mantids never asked for any.
The Bamboo Temple Chinese Benevolent Association is a fraternity of like minded men (and women) who believe in the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. We believe we have a responsibility to leave the world a better place than we found it. We believe men must have honor and live in love, faith, hope, goodness, kindness, generosity, and peace.
